Hydra-Matic Transmission Family Trees
4L60-E Series
The HydraMatic 4L60/4L65/4L70 family of transmissions is differentiated primarily by gearset design. Each planetary gearset in the 4L60 has four pinion gears. There are five pinion gears in the 4L65 and 4L70, but the 4L70 has a higher torque rating. The external dimensions and mounting provisions are identical for each transmission in the 4L60 family. The maximum torque capacity for each includes:
4L60E – 380 lb.ft.
4L65E – 430 lb.ft.
4L70E – 495 lb.ft.
4L60E vs 4L70E
Most of the differences between the 4L60E and the 4L70E are internal. There are a few exceptions. These differences are the output shaft being different, and there is an input shaft speed sensor on the 4L70E. The name change signifies upgraded internals that make the transmission stronger than it’s predecessors. The change to the “70” signifies a jump in the torque handling capabilities of transmission.
4L70E
The 4L70E is a four speed automatic gm transmission. It has five total gears including reverse. Fourth gear is a .70 overdrive. It shares the same case and basic design with the 4L60E, and 4L65E. It is also the final iteration of a design that started back with the 700R4.
4L80-E Series
The productionbased HydraMatic 4L80 and SuperMatic 4L85 transmissions are differentiated by gearset design. Each planetary gearset in the 4L80 has four pinion gears, while the 4L85 has five pinion gears. The external dimensions and mounting provisions are identical for each.
The maximum torque capacity for each includes:
4L80E – 440 lb.ft.
4L85E – 685 lb.ft.

Differences between 4L80-E and 4L85-E (4L80 Family Transmissions) The 4L80-E gearsets have four pinion gears, while the 4L85 comes equipped with five pinion gears in each. External fit form and function are identical between the two variants of
4L80-E and 4L85-E transmission assemblies.
Maximum engine torque capacity rating for these units are:
Production 4L80-E – 440 lb ft
Supermatic 4L85-E – 685 lb ft
