GM Performance Parts Circle Track Crate Engine Story |
Crate
Engine Rules: To make circle track racing more cost-effective and competitive,
more and more tracks are going to
crate engine rules.
These rules allow only factory-sealed
crate engines of equal horsepower. This prevents big-budget teams from
overwhelming cost-limited racers and new competitors.
It also refocuses competition where it should be, on driving skills and
chassis-tuning expertise. All this results in more exciting racing. That's
why more and more racers and track owners say "Crate Engine Rules"
rule.
Cost-Effectiveness: Using a
crate engine, a circle track team
can expect its engine costs to drop by as much as 50 percent
over a several-year racing life.
Advantages: The GM Circle Track
Crate Engine allows new talent in circle track racing to make itself known.
This includes everybody from drivers to crew and support staff. It's easy
to see how crate engine rules encourage more participants in the sport.
That alone is sure to increase the number of cares competing in each series,
which in turn will increase the number of fans that attend each event.
GM Circle Track Crate Engines are
a win-win proposition for everyone.
The GM Circle Track
Crate Engine Pedigree:
We derived all three of our GM Circle Track Crate Engines from a superflow
dyno using a 4-barrel 650-cfm Holley carburetor P/N 80541-1. Stepped headers
are 32" long with primary tubes 1 3/4" and 3" collector.
We used 92-octane unleaded gasoline.

We
factory-seal each of our three engines at the intake manifold, cylinder
head, front cover, and oil pan with special twist-off bolt heads. Each has
a stamped-steel valve cover with racing-style breathers.
The 355 and 350/400 engine packages include a normal rotation iron water
pump. The 350 does not.
The oil pan for the 350 is 8"
deep at the sump; the oil pans for the 355 and 350/400 are 7" deep
at the sump. Oil pans for all three packages clear most GM rear-steer
chassis with stock engine location.
The carburetor, spark plug wires,
starter, oil filter, oil filter adapter, and exhaust manifolds are not
included.
Installers must use distributor P/N 1104067 or melonized distributor gear
P/N 10456413 on all crate engines with steel camshafts.

JUST
THE FAQS
GM Performance Parts Circle Track Crate Engines
Why the Huge Interest in GM Performance parts
Circle Track Crate Engines?
Cost!! These engines are powerful, durable, and economical, yet owners
can save over 50 percent on engine costs over a three-season run. As more
and more tracks adopt crate engine rules, GM Performance Parts Crate Engines
level the playing field for all competitors. Race teams with the largest
budgets no longer have and advantage over new racers or older teams with
limited pocketbooks.
Are GM Performance Parts Circle Track Crate Engines
Durable Enough for Racing?
Absolutely. Hundreds of our crate engines have completed full seasons
at short tracks around the country. They also have been successful at
Sebring, IHRA drag racing, and the One Lap of America event. Some engines
are still competitive after several seasons, with only normal wear.
Are Crate Engines Better?
Without doubt. They're powerful, durable, and economical. Owners can
save up to 50 percent on engine costs over a three-season run. When tracks
adopt crate engine rules, as more than 25 have nationwide, they level
the playing field for all competitors.
Do Many Tracks Accept Crate Engines?
You Bet. More and more tracks are adopting crate engine rules. Today
the number is well over 25, from coast to coast.
Why Does GM Performance Parts Seal Its Crate Engines?
We seal key components to limit tampering. This feature helps everyone
to be competitive. Approved engine builders can rebuild one of our crate
engines, but they then must reseal the engine before delivery. Only track
operators can obtain replacement bolts, if the need arises. GM does not
police repairs or validate the engine after it is repaired.
Which Crate Engine Is the Right One for Me?
It depends on track rules where the engine will be running and the
features the owner/driver determines to be most valuable within those
parameters. First, check the track rules. Then compare the technical specifications
of our three GM Performance parts Circle Track Crate Engines in this site
and or our catalog to get the right match for your needs.
Does a GM Performance Parts Circle Track Crate
Engine Require a New Carburetor?
Probably, GM recommends the Holley 650-cfm four-barrel carburetor
P/N 80541-1 for all its GM Performance Parts Circle Track Crate Engines.
Two-barrel carbs just don't allow enough volume to flow, creating a restriction.
The more efficient 4BBL setup is easier to tune in a variety of conditions.
Will a GM Circle Track Crate Engine Work With A
Dodge Or Ford?
For sure. our GM Circle Track Crate Engines have run successfully
under Dodge and Ford sheet metal.
What Are the Benefits of Racing a Crate Engine?
1. Your initial engine costs are less than those of a "built"
motor.
2. Your average engine costs should be reduced over the course of the
first season from less maintenance, e.g., less frequent oil changes, reduced
fuel costs, etc. If you elect to use the engine a second year, you will
see a tremendous drop in engine expenses.
3. All your competitors will have the same engine and competition will
be close and more rewarding. You'll get to actually race!
4. Teams with more money or bigger budgets will not be able to outspend
you in the engine bay and make you uncompetitive.
5. Do you really know how much power your engine makes? GM will give each
and every racer the same engine package. With a sealed engine program,
everyone is on a level playing field, with the driver's skill as well
as the racecar tuning and prep becoming the winning factors.
